Fami designs and realises Spiral’s new picking area
Tool shop resale
For over 50 years, Spiral has been specialising in the sale of tools, industrial equipment and PPE. For three generations, the Vienna-based company has been offering its services as a reliable partner with over 160,000 items in the range, 40,000 of which in stock.
The desire to offer customers an increasingly advanced, rapid and efficient service is behind Spiral’s decision to invest 35 million Euro in the construction of a new logistics facility. The area, measuring 30,000 m2, will house a vertical warehouse, a cantilever, an automatic warehouse, shelving for the insertion of plastic containers and the Accounts office. A 420 m2 area was set aside for the installation of a series of drawer cabinets for containing C-Parts and small parts.
Spiral submitted the project for the outfitting of this area to several companies in order to find the perfect partner for such an important investment.
The choice fell on Fami, thanks to its ability to acknowledge the customer’s needs and its flexibility in adapting the product to each request made by Spiral. The Master system instantly appeared to be the most suitable solution, owing to its customisation options and the possibility of integrating several elements. The project started in December 2016 and ended in April 2019, involving people from various departments, including the Technical and Foreign Sales departments, besides Fami Handels, the Austrian branch.
The consulting process led to the purchase of 250 bays of the Master System SR shelving, each equipped with different-size drawers containing longitudinal and transversal dividers for organising the material to be handled.
Each individual shelving element is 1,500 mm high, 714 mm wide and 726 mm deep, and can contain roughly 52,500 items.
Spiral required a system that would allow for entering into the management software a reference for the contents of each single drawer, so as to speed up the picking process.
Spiral required a system that would allow for entering into the management software a reference for the contents of each single drawer, so as to speed up the picking process. The solution devised by the Fami Technical Department consisted in adding a drawer number and the relative barcode to the handles of all 2,500 drawers.
The project’s customisation is also reflected in the choice of colours for the Master System SR: sunny yellow for the handles and anthracite grey for the body of the shelving and the drawers. In this way, while the interior furnishings bear the company’s colours, they also convey Spiral’s modern identity.
The Spiral project is the ultimate embodiment of the Fami approach: knowing the needs of customers and understanding them deeply to create customised products capable of fulfilling their requests.
